Root Structure

Many native grasses develop massive roots which serve important functions in soil formation, fertility and conservation, water quality and conservation, and carbon sequestration. Highly productive and resilient grassland plant communities protect soils from erosion, prevent water runoff and excessive soil evaporation, and help circulate nutrients to maintain soil fertility. Grassland plants provide vital habitats for wildlife including mammals, birds and insects important to agriculture.
